My Car and Slavery – Another Perspective, An Analogy

When we must ask Daddy for permission to do anything, we are not independent, we are not free, we are not sovereign.  The main issue wasn’t if I could take my car on the trip. That’s the event that brought this issue to the forefront. That is, driving out west to see my friends. Dad could have said it was ok, but that’s not my beef.  The issue was that I had to ask Daddy if it was OK to take my car on the trip.  Heck, I thought it was my car.  I thought I was a big boy now – independent.  So, you can say it was about my car, and yep, that is true, but that’s not the point. The point is I must ask for permission to take my car on the trip.

Now Let’s pretend we are South Carolina.  If we must ask the Federal Government for permission to do anything, we are not independent, we are not free, we are not sovereign.  The main issue wasn’t if we could take our slaves out West. That’s the event that brought this issue to the forefront. That is, settling out west if we choose to go.  The Feds could have said it was Okay, but that’s not the main beef. The issue was that we had to ask the Federal Government if it was Okay to take my property, my slaves, out West.  Heck, I thought they were my slaves.  I thought I was sovereign, except for those few enumerated powers given to the Federal Government and this was not one of them.   So, you can say the issue was about slavery, that is true, but that’s not the point.  The point is I must ask for permission to take my slaves wherever I want to go without any restrictions from the Federal Government.  So, you say I need to ask for permission, and I say I’m leaving the agreement now, because you are not following the Federal Constitution.  Nothing gives you the power to tell me what to do with my slaves.  Oh, I got other issues, too, but we are talking about slavery and your overreach of power right now.

You are slamming us for being from the South and having slaves.  You act  like you are morally superior to the South. You forget you had slaves, too, in the North, but you tried to hide it from the people and history by calling them Border states.  You are sneaky and not very forthright.  Some would say you are dishonest.  At least we are trying to be honest.
